Description

What Are Codeine Phosphate 30mg Tablets?

Codeine Phosphate 30mg tablets contain codeine phosphate, an opioid analgesic used for the relief of pain. Codeine acts within the central nervous system to reduce how pain signals are perceived.

It may be prescribed for moderate pain, including pain following an operation or injury, particularly when other painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone have not provided adequate relief.

Codeine can have other prescribed uses, but this product page primarily concerns Codeine Phosphate 30mg tablets for pain management.

For other medicines and information relating to pain management, visit the Pain Relief category.

Codeine is an opioid medicine. Repeated or prolonged use can lead to tolerance, physical dependence and addiction. Take Codeine Phosphate only according to the instructions provided by your prescriber and the dispensing label supplied with your medicine.

Instructions

How to Take Codeine Phosphate 30mg

Take Codeine Phosphate exactly as instructed by your doctor, pharmacist or other prescribing healthcare professional.

Because this product may be supplied by different manufacturers and Codeine can be prescribed for different clinical reasons, do not use a generic online dosage schedule in place of the instructions on your prescription, dispensing label or the patient information leaflet supplied with your particular medicine.

Swallow the tablets with water. Codeine tablets can be taken with or without food unless the instructions supplied with your medicine tell you otherwise.

Do not:

  • Take more Codeine than prescribed
  • Increase the dose yourself if you feel that the medicine is not providing enough relief
  • Take doses more frequently than instructed
  • Share Codeine with another person
  • Continue treatment for longer than advised without discussing it with your healthcare professional

If the prescribed dose does not adequately control your pain or you are experiencing troublesome side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist rather than changing the dose yourself.

If You Miss a Dose

If you forget a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose.

If your next dose is due soon, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal schedule.

Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you are uncertain about what to do, check the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine or ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Stopping Codeine Treatment

If Codeine has been taken regularly for a prolonged period, the body can become physically dependent on it.

Do not suddenly stop regular or long-term Codeine treatment without medical advice. Stopping an opioid abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Your doctor may recommend gradually reducing the dose when Codeine is no longer required.

Safety & Side Effects

Before Taking Codeine Phosphate 30mg

Codeine is not suitable for everyone.

Before taking Codeine Phosphate 30mg, make sure the healthcare professional responsible for your treatment knows about your medical conditions and any other medicines, supplements or remedies you use.

Medical advice is particularly important if you:

  • Have breathing or lung problems
  • Have liver or kidney problems
  • Have low blood pressure
  • Have had a head injury
  • Have previously experienced an allergic reaction to Codeine or another opioid
  • Have a history of alcohol, prescription medicine or recreational drug dependence
  • Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Take other medicines that can cause drowsiness or affect the central nervous system

Codeine is not suitable for children under 12 years. Additional restrictions apply to some adolescents, including after tonsil or adenoid surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine because individual manufacturers may provide additional warnings or product-specific information.

Common Side Effects

Like all medicines, Codeine can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Common side effects include:

  • Constipation
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Feeling sleepy or tired
  • Sweating

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if a side effect bothers you, does not improve or causes concern.

Serious Side Effects

Codeine can occasionally cause more serious reactions.

Seek urgent medical advice if you develop symptoms such as:

  • Slow, weak or shallow breathing
  • Significant difficulty breathing
  • An unusual or irregular heartbeat
  • Symptoms of very low blood pressure, such as severe weakness, confusion, blurred vision or pronounced dizziness
  • Symptoms suggesting a serious allergic reaction

The full list of possible side effects depends partly on the particular product supplied. Always check the patient information leaflet included with your medicine.

Dependence, Tolerance and Withdrawal

Codeine is an opioid and can cause tolerance, dependence and addiction.

Tolerance means that repeated use can make a medicine feel less effective over time. This does not mean you should increase your dose yourself.

Signs that opioid use may be becoming problematic can include feeling that you need to take Codeine more frequently, taking it for longer than advised, wanting to take more than prescribed, or continuing to use it for reasons other than those for which it was prescribed.

Speak to your doctor if you are concerned about your use of Codeine.

Withdrawal symptoms can occur if Codeine is suddenly stopped after the body has become accustomed to regular use. A healthcare professional may recommend gradually reducing treatment rather than stopping abruptly.

Alcohol, Other Medicines and Driving

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Codeine because alcohol can increase drowsiness and other unwanted effects.

Codeine may also interact with other medicines, particularly medicines that cause sedation or affect the central nervous system.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines, supplements and herbal remedies you use before starting Codeine.

Codeine can cause sleepiness, dizziness, confusion or visual disturbance in some people. Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery if the medicine affects your ability to do so safely.

Emergency Information

Taking more Codeine than prescribed can be dangerous.

If you have taken more than your prescribed dose of Codeine, contact NHS 111 urgently, even if you do not currently feel unwell.

Possible symptoms associated with excessive opioid effects can include:

  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Feeling or being sick
  • Very small pupils
  • Slow or shallow breathing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of consciousness

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if someone has severe difficulty breathing, becomes unconscious or cannot be woken, stops breathing normally, has a seizure or appears to be experiencing another life-threatening reaction.

Do not drive yourself to A&E. If possible, take the medicine packaging, patient information leaflet, any remaining tablets and information about other medicines being taken.

Information Leaflet

The patient information leaflet may differ according to the manufacturer supplied.

Always read the leaflet included with your actual pack of Codeine Phosphate 30mg tablets before taking the medicine. The leaflet contains manufacturer-specific information about:

  • How to take the medicine
  • Who should not take it
  • Warnings and precautions
  • Medicine interactions
  • Possible side effects
  • Dependence and withdrawal
  • Storage
  • Ingredients and excipients

Follow the instructions on your dispensing label and the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

If the information in your leaflet is unclear or differs from general information on this page, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before changing how you take the medicine.
